Using the Text Only Driver with DeskTop Mailer

NOTE: We suggest disabling the label tool box feature within DeskTop Mailer.

One of the printer drivers commonly used with Desktop Mailer and our Rena printers is the "Text Only" driver.

NOTE: When using the "Text Only" driver with a Rena printer, many of the printer's features will need to be set (controlled) via the printer's program menu. Example: Font, Print Quality, etc.
Due to the function of the "Text Only" driver, true type fonts can not be sent to your Rena printers via the Desktop Mailer program. If you are interested in printing in a true type font, please use the appropriate "authentic" Rena driver.

The following Desktop Mailer supplied drivers are all "Text Only" drivers, and will work with Rena printer models: DA300/305/306/307/313, DA590/600/606/607/608/610/615, PS1000/2000, XPS1000/2000 and
Envelope Imager I/II/III.

NOTE: If the following features are not set correctly, the Software will not generate a Form Feed at the end of each address,  which may cause the printer to print multiple addresses per piece or cause the printer to display the error message "Position Error Check Top Margin" or "Address too Long...". Improper settings can cause the DA608/610/612*/613*/615 or PS1000/2000, not to print or feed any material at all. You may only get the error message "Address Too Long...", or "Image Height Exceeds Max Value".
In addition, if the following features are not set correctly, the software and printer may pause between each address printed.

  1. In DeskTop Mailer, under the Page/Form setup, make sure your form design is set as follows:

    1. In Desktop Mailer, Click on Print

    2. Click on your desired choice (Non-presorted Labels, Presorted Labels, Single Label or Envelope)

    3. Click on Page/Form Setup

    4. Click on your desired Form (Example: RENA.FRM). and then Click on Edit or Click on New to design a new form.

    9. Set the "Height of label" and "Form Height", to the actual height of the material you will be feeding, but do not exceed the printer's maximum print height. See "Maximum Print Height Settings" below.

    10. Set the "Form Top and Bottom Margins" as desired.
Important: When using the Envelope Imager I/II/III, PS1000/2000 or DA615 models, set the "Top and Bottom Margin" to zero. If you set a Top and Bottom margin to any other value, this will reduce the maximum print height of the printer by the value you set.

How to Print a PostNet (Delivery Point) Barcode using the Text Only Driver:

Rena Envelope Imager III         ALL Other Rena Printer Models

NOTE: As of August 1, 2000 the USPS will no longer accept Delivery Point Bar-Codes (DPBC) that are generated solely by firmware (e.g. printers). The USPS now requires the use of CASS certified address-matching software to assign the delivery point codes. The new delivery point coding rules make it impractical for the firmware (e.g. printers) to accurately search the address data, locate the correct zip+4 and delivery point information and print the corresponding delivery point barcode. In specific circumstances, the delivery point code (DPC) is now based on the secondary address value (e.g. apartment or suite number) instead of the primary address value.

Rena Envelope Imager III

NOTE: We suggest disabling the label tool box feature within DeskTop Mailer.

  1. Make sure the following menu choices, within your Envelope Imager III printer, are set as shown below:

    Barcode Location = "off"
    5 Digit On/Off = “off”

    NOTE
: These are the Envelope Imager III's Default settings.

  2. The command line "~~[ZIP] [DP2]" must be entered in the DeskTop Mailer template, to enable the program to send the appropriate barcode information to the Rena printer.

NOTE: Although there are other ways to print the postnet barcode using the "Text Only" driver and the Envelope Imager III, this is most versatile method because the barcode will be printed at the position you place the command line "~~[ZIP] [DP2]".

All Rena Printer Models (Except the Envelope Imager III)

NOTE: We suggest disabling the label tool box feature within DeskTop Mailer.

  1. Make sure the following menu choices, within your Rena printer, are set as shown below:

    Type of Barc: “zip”
    Barc. Options
    : or Barc. Search: “off”
Barc. Position: Does not matter. The barcode position is controlled via your software.

    NOTE
: These are the Rena Printer’s Default settings.

  2. The command line "%10 [ZIP] [DP2] %10" must be entered in the DeskTop Mailer template, to enable the program to send the appropriate barcode information to the Rena printer.

Please be sure you are typing "%10" as "Percent Symbol, Number ONE, Number ZERO" and that you have turned the printer's "HEX to ASCII:" feature "ON".
The printer will then translate the numbers (11 digits), presented to it via DeskTop Mailer, into bars.
The printer will automatically add the check digit (12th digit) to the Delivery Point Barcode.

DA590/600 Users:
If you choose to send a True Type font to a Rena DA590 or DA600 printer, the print speeds will decrease significantly. This is because a True Type font is sent to these printers as a graphic image. In order to obtain the optimum print speeds on these printer, when using a Rena Driver, be sure to choose an "internal printer font" via the software. An internal printer font is a font, which is identical in name and point size to a font available within the printer. Example: Cour12. Choosing an internal printer font will allow the software to send the appropriate escape sequence to select the font, and the address information will be sent as text information and not graphic information.
NOTE: If you are interested in obtaining the best print speeds, we recommend using the Generic / Text Only driver provided by the software manufacturer, instead of using a Rena driver.

DA606/607/608/610/615, Envelope Imager I/II (DA612*/613*) and PS1000/2000 Users:
Rena drivers for these printer models have the ability to select how to print True Type Fonts. To obtain the best print speeds, we recommend that the font properties, found within your Rena printer driver, are set to "download True Type fonts". In some cases it may be necessary to change this setting. The procedures below will describe how to check or change this driver setting.

Windows NT4/2000/XP Users: Click on Start, Settings, Printers. Right Click on the Rena printer model of your choice. Click on "Default Document". Under the Heading "Document Options", locate the feature "Print Text as Graphics" and Click on it. Setting this feature to "NO", will give you the best print speed.
Note: In some cases, you may experience problems printing True Type fonts, when the feature "Print Text as Graphics" is set to "NO", as described above. In this case, it may be necessary to set this feature to "YES" instead.
When printing from DeskTop Mailer to a DA606 or DA607 printer, via Windows NT4/2000, it has been our experience that the feature "Print Text as Graphics" must be set to "YES".

DA606/607 font downloading limitation: If you get a "Memory Error" displayed on your DA606/607, when choosing to download fonts from your Windows program, you will need to add additional memory to your DA606/607. The "standard" DA606/607 has only enough memory to handle most 11 or 12 point fonts.
DA606 users: It is possible that you will need to update the printer’s Firmware (EPROM's), in order to make your printer work correctly when downloading true type fonts. Please contact your local Rena Dealer to purchase and have additional memory and updated EPROM's installed in your DA606. Please be aware, that the "automatic true type font downloading feature", described above, may not work with a 1994 Version DA606. Also, you can not add memory or update EPROM's in a 1994 Version DA606.
